Beyond the Fallen Timber didn't happen by accident, or, at least, the stories it contains are not accidental. They are born from a life in the mountains of Northern California...
I grew up visiting the family cabin on the North Fork of the Feather River most of my life. Walked the logging roads, swam in the river, slept under the pines. In my last year of high school, we moved into the cabin for six months. No electricity, gravity fed water, fetched drinking water from a spring, followed a maze of dirt roads that led back to town.
I graduated from high school here, and eventually moved away. For a brief time though, I found myself returning after each life setback (at least what I considered a setback) in hopes of coming back to center.
Beyond the Fallen Timber is a reflection of trying to figure things out, a reflection of those moments where life didn't turn out the way I planned, a reflection of when I tried to find myself by returning to the past - one where memory treated me far kinder than the reality. It may be a work of fiction, but every story comes from a place very real.
